The predecessor of the School of Art and Design at Shanghai University ofEngineering Science was the Applied Photography Art major and the Department ofAdvertising and Imaging Technology established in 1978. It was officiallyrenamed as the School of Art and Design in 1998. The college is authorized as afirst level academic master's degree program in design and a master's degreeprogram in design. The college is a peak discipline construction unit ofShanghai Design IV, a practice base for Master of Arts in Art and Design majorsof Shanghai Education Commission, a national first-class undergraduate majorconstruction site for Product Design majors, and a first-class undergraduatemajor construction site for Art and Technology and Visual Communication Designin Shanghai. In the 2024 ranking of the best disciplines in China, the designdiscipline ranks 48th, ranking in the top 30% of the country for twoconsecutive years and 6th among universities in Shanghai.

There are about 1300 undergraduate students and over 300 master's students in thecollege. The college currently has 97 faculty and staff members, including 71full-time teachers, 8 professors, 35 senior or above professional titles, 40doctoral degrees, and 24 teachers with overseas study backgrounds. Among thefull-time teachers, there is 1 Oriental scholar, 1 young Oriental scholar, 2Pujiang talents, 3 Morning Light Plan talents, 1 leading figure in Changning District, and 1 top-notch talent in Songjiang District.

The college adheres to the concept of "combining arts and engineering,integrating industry and education", adheres to the policy of integratingindustry, academia and research, and is rooted in the industry to establishdisciplines. It has built a design discipline construction model centeredaround the G60 design circle, with the discipline characteristic of"updating and creating digital and intelligent spaces". It hasestablished a "full cycle design and R&D talent training system",and deeply cultivates fields such as "transportation vehicles and their digitalcockpits", "smart exhibitions", and "smart homes".With the goal of "new humanities" design education, it aims tocultivate high-level composite design application talents suitable for modernindustrial needs. The college has developed a mixed online and offlineapplication-oriented talent training model, actively cultivating "urbanand rural innovation and sustainable design talents". As the chairman unitof the national urban design digital industry education integration industrycommunity, it has established a fashion consumer goods industry college andestablished industry university research bases with 78 enterprises includingOriental TV, Donghao Lansheng, Jielong, and Pentium. We recruit full-timeinternational graduate students and establish an overseas education base atLiverpool John Moores University in the UK that integrates undergraduate,master's, and doctoral education. We have also established cooperativeeducation programs with nine overseas universities, including the University ofEdinburgh in the UK and Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan.

  In recent years, theresearch capabilities of the college have made significant progress. It haspresided over 4 projects funded by the National Arts Foundation, 2 art projectsfunded by the National Social Science Foundation, 1 project funded by theNational Natural Science Foundation, 1 project funded by the China ScholarshipCouncil, 6 projects funded by the Ministry of Education in humanities andsocial sciences, 1 project funded by the Shanghai Municipal Decision makingConsultation, 14 projects funded by the Shanghai Municipal Art and SciencePlanning, 6 projects funded by the Shanghai Philosophy and Social ScienceFoundation, and over 10 projects funded by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.Teachers publish over 20 high-level papers annually, including SCI, SSCI,CSSCI, EI, and Peking University Core. They also publish more than 10monographs and textbooks. The annual funding for horizontal and verticalprojects reaches 5 million yuan. Students have achieved excellent results inprofessional competitions such as the National College Student AdvertisingDesign Competition, National Industrial Design Competition, and Ping YaoPhotography Competition, winning over 500 awards.

Master's students implementa credit system, and the full-time Master of Arts program lasts for 3 years,with a maximum study period of 5 years. Excellent candidates can graduate earlywith approval, but the early graduation time cannot exceed six months. Master'sstudents generally spend one and a half years on course learning and socialpractice, and more than a year engaged in scientific research and thesis work.


This professional degreeadopts a combination of course learning, practical teaching, and thesisdevelopment, implementing a "dual supervisor system". Master'sstudents are jointly guided by on campus supervisors and corporate supervisors.The course learning adopts a credit system. During the semester, aftercompleting the required credits for the degree, one can apply for a graduationproject topic. The duration of the graduation project and thesis research workis generally not less than six months. The research work of a thesis should beclosely integrated with professional practice, and the graduation projectexhibition and defense must be completed on campus. The training processhighlights professional characteristics, emphasizes the cultivation ofstudents' practical abilities, and balances the cultivation of theory andinternal qualities. Adopting a combination of classroom teaching, individualcoaching and training on skills and techniques, and artistic practice as atraining method. Actively create conditions for artistic practice, establishvarious forms of practice bases, increase the number of hours and credit ratioin practical activities, enable students to master the basic theories andprofessional knowledge of their major, and improve their comprehensivepractical ability in art and design. Encourage the adoption of the"1+1+1" school enterprise joint training model. Encourage theformation of a mentor group for joint guidance. Encourage cooperation andcultivation both domestically and internationally.
